Leo XIV consecrates the world's tallest church tower at the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona

A structure of world rank

The Christ Tower forms the central element of Barcelona's landmark, which has been under construction since the 19th century. Even in its unfinished state, the Sagrada Familia attracts millions of visitors from all over the world every year. Its completion is considered one of the best-known long-term projects in architectural history.

The Pope's visit was not limited to the basilica. He also visited the parish church of Sant Agustí, popularly known as the "Cathedral of the Poor," located in the El Raval neighbourhood. Another item on the programme took Leo XIV to the mountain monastery of Montserrat, a spiritual site of national significance in Catalonia. There, the Pope prayed in the Catalan language to promote understanding in the region. "Beten, ohne zu spalten" was the message with which he underscored the Catholic Church's commitment to Catalonia's cultural autonomy aspirations.

According to the report, the Catholic Church has fundamentally supported Catalonia's cultural autonomy aspirations. At the same time, it has not actively advocated for the independence efforts of radical Catalan separatists. The papal visit thus fell within a politically sensitive context between Madrid and Barcelona.

In addition, the Pope addressed words of comfort to inmates in a prison. In doing so, he set a sign of compassion for people on the margins of society. The visit to the detainees followed the papal tradition of also visiting places that stand for the poor and the marginalised when travelling.

Overall, the Pope combined spiritual, cultural, and social emphases with his Barcelona trip. The consecration of the Christ Tower, the encounters in El Raval, Montserrat, and the prison, as well as the participation of the Spanish royal couple, made the visit one of the most media-effective events in Spain's church history since the consecration of the high altar by Benedict XVI in 2010.
