Leo XIV consecrated the Christ Tower of the Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona on Wednesday evening, thereby handing over the world's tallest church tower to the public.

The solemn consecration took place as part of the Pope's visit to the Catalan metropolis. "Leo XIV. hat am Mittwochabend den Christusturm der Sagrada Familia geweiht," the report stated. At 172.5 metres, the structure surpasses all previously known church towers in the world. The spectacular Sagrada Familia cathedral already fascinates millions of tourists, even as a construction site.

The Spanish royal couple also appeared at the service at the world-famous basilica: Felipe and Letizia attended the Mass. The presence of the royal house underscored the cultural and political significance of the event for Spain and the region of Catalonia.
