Leon Goretzka moves to the Premier League to join Aston Villa

Career in Munich ends after eight league titles

During his career so far, Goretzka has won a total of eight German league titles, three DFB-Pokal trophies, as well as the Champions League triumph in 2020. With the German national team, he was deployed at the European Championship 2024, among other tournaments. The move to England marks a new beginning abroad.

The native of Bochum, who received his footballing education at VfL Bochum, brings experience from the Bundesliga, the Champions League, and international tournaments. Aston Villa evidently sees him as a key player for the upcoming tasks in the Premier League and in international competition.

Aston Villa as a new challenge in the Premier League

With the transfer, a longer phase of speculation about the future of the German national player comes to an end. In recent weeks, possible interested parties from England, Spain, and Italy had been reported. Aston Villa had reportedly prevailed against several competitors.

The club from Birmingham, which won the Europa League last season, is making a statement in the transfer market with the signing of Goretzka. Unai Emery thus receives another experienced player for his midfield. The club had already invested specifically in high-caliber players in recent transfer windows.

Goretzka is expected to take on the central role in midfield in Birmingham. His strengths in build-up play, his vision, and his goal threat from the second line are intended to strengthen the team. In Munich, he had increasingly lost importance over the past two seasons.

Farewell to FC Bayern after a long history of success

At FC Bayern Munich, this marks the end of an era: Goretzka was a permanent fixture in the midfield of the record champions for years and was significantly involved in the 2020 Champions League victory. His departure comes after eight German league titles and an extensive collection of trophies in FCB colors.

For the German national football team, Goretzka remains an option. With his experiences from the Premier League, he could prospectively also play an important role in the upcoming international matches.

The medical check and the official presentation of the new player at Aston Villa are expected in the coming days. With the transfer, the club underscores its ambitions to play a leading role in both the league and internationally in the coming season.
