The Kepler University Hospital (KUK) in Linz has acknowledged shared responsibility for a medical misdiagnosis that led to the removal of a healthy uterus from a patient who is now 30 years old.

At a press conference held by the hospital on Tuesday, KUK Managing Director Meinhard Lukas admitted that communication with the affected woman had "Luft nach oben." At the same time, he said it was a "falsch positive Befundung," even though the question of culpability formally remains unresolved. The hospital did not want to "die Beweislast nicht der Patientin auferlegen."

The woman had undergone a so-called curettage after a miscarriage. During the examination, a tissue sample was taken that confirmed a suspicion of cancer – but, as it later turned out, falsely. The correction was communicated to the patient only "nach längerer Zeit – die Rede ist von zwei bis drei Wochen," Lukas reported.
