The organization Lobbycontrol has sharply criticized the move of former Federal Economics Minister and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck to the Danish investor Urban Partners, announced for August, and has called for a three-year cooling-off period for outgoing politicians.

Criticism of power imbalances

Lobbycontrol accuses Habeck of reinforcing existing power imbalances by moving into the private sector. Aurel Eschmann, Lobbycontrol's expert on lobbying rules, told the dpa that such moves could damage political trust. "Das verstärkt bestehende Machtungleichheiten zugunsten von Vermögenden und großen Unternehmen," Eschmann said. It is fundamentally problematic when politicians move into the private sector, because only financially strong actors can afford former cabinet members and benefit from their knowledge and contacts.
