US defense contractor Lockheed Martin announced on Monday the development of a prototype of an autonomous drone fighter called Morfius X-Rotor, which is intended to combat drone swarms using high-energy microwaves.

Background: Drone swarms as a new threat scenario

The Morfius X-Rotor is designed to engage up to 50 enemy drones per flight using high-energy microwaves (High Power Microwave – HPM). Directed high-energy microwaves are used to disrupt the internal electronics of enemy drones, including their guidance systems. Lockheed Martin stated: „Bis zu 50 Drohnen sollen pro Flug bekämpft werden können, verspricht Lockheed Martin in einer Mitteilung.
