Rival Demonstrations Draw Crowds

One demonstration, organized by right-wing activist Tommy Robinson under the banner "Unite the Kingdom," drew an estimated 50,000 participants. The march, which focused on opposition to immigration, had previously attracted over 100,000 people in September 2023, resulting in violent clashes with police and injuries to two dozen officers.

Meanwhile, a pro-Palestinian rally marking Nakba Day—commemorating the displacement of Palestinians after the establishment of Israel in 1948—gathered between 15,000 and 40,000 people in the Kensington district. Justice Minister David Lammy accused the "Unite the Kingdom" organizers of "spreading hate and division," a sentiment echoed by critics of the right-wing demonstration.

Peaceful Outcome Amid Heavy Security

Despite fears of confrontation, the two demonstrations remained largely peaceful, with police efforts successfully keeping the groups apart. Eleven people were arrested shortly after the gatherings began, and a total of 31 arrests were made throughout the day for various offenses.

The simultaneous events strained police resources, with the Metropolitan Police calling it their largest public order operation in years. The scale of the deployment underscored the challenges of managing high-profile protests and sporting events in the British capital.
