Vienna, 27 June 2026
An unprecedented June heat wave has Austria and large parts of Europe in its grip, causing numerous state capitals to equal or surpass their previous June records.
Records in the State Capitals
The heat wave, which has been lying over Central and Southern Europe for days, is reaching a scale in Austria that eclipses the measurement series of recent decades. In Graz, the previous longest June heat wave of twelve days from 2025 will "likely be equaled on Monday and surpassed on Tuesday," according to the ORF weather editorial team. Linz has also already exceeded its previous record of six consecutive hot days from 2021. In the state capitals, heat waves have "become 50 percent more frequent since the 1960s and now last two to seven days longer."
Previously, Innsbruck and Bregenz had each recorded eight days in June 2019 as their record value. In Vienna and Eisenstadt, the previous June record was nine days from 2017. Klagenfurt will "likely just barely miss" the previous June record of 15 consecutive hot days from 2025. St. Pölten does not appear in the statistics because the heat series was interrupted there on Tuesday with a value just below 30 degrees.
