Low Danube Water Levels Reveal Mammoth Bones near Ruse

Record Lows and Their Consequences

Because of a lack of precipitation and successive heatwaves since May, the Danube has reached record lows in some sections. Hydrologists and navigation authorities have been monitoring the water level with concern for weeks, because freight shipping on the river is being severely disrupted.

Near Ruse, the Bulgarian counterpart to the Romanian city of Giurgiu, runs one of the most important Danube sections for cross-border freight traffic. If the level drops further, inland vessels must reduce their cargo or cease operations altogether.

Scientists view the find as further evidence of how greatly climate change is altering the landscape. During dry summers, layers that are normally hidden beneath the riverbed are exposed, the museum explained.

Significance for Research

Staff at the Regional History Museum in Ruse have recovered, conserved, and prepared the bones for further examination, according to the institution. An exact age determination using radiocarbon dating is still pending.

Initial assessments suggest that the finds are several thousand years old. If the state of preservation is confirmed, the specimen could be one of the most complete known mammoth records in the lower Danube region.

Authorities in Sofia and Bucharest, meanwhile, point to the ongoing drought in southeastern Europe. The national weather services have also registered an above-average number of hot days this summer, with temperatures well above 35 degrees Celsius.

Reactions and Weather Conditions

Along the upper Danube as well, including in Bavaria and Austria, water levels in recent weeks were in some cases significantly below seasonal averages. Environmental organizations are calling for greater efforts in flood protection and in the renaturation of floodplains.

According to the museum, the find near Ruse is the first documented woolly mammoth complex find on the lower Danube in decades. The museum plans to present the bones to the public in a special exhibition.

Whether the low water level reveals further finds depends on the weather in the coming weeks. If precipitation increases in the Danube's catchment area, the find sites will likely be flooded again quickly.
