Water-Poor Danube Reveals Mines and Mammoth Bones

In Bulgaria, at the port of Russe, the receding water meanwhile brought fossilized bones to light. The Regional History Museum of Russe confirmed that the find consisted of a lower jaw, two tusks, and a rib of a mammoth. „Experten würden nun daran arbeiten, um die genaue Herkunft und das Alter des urzeitlichen Tiers festzustellen," explained a spokesperson for the museum.

Both episodes exemplify a phenomenon affecting large parts of the Danube this summer. River sections normally covered by several meters of water now lie dry. Shipping, energy production, and drinking water supply along the river are all impacted.

Climate Change as the Background

Hydrologists point out that the combination of low precipitation and sustained heat is causing water levels to drop. „Wissenschaftlicher Konsens besteht darin, dass die durch menschlichen Aktivitäten verursachten Klimaveränderungen die Wahrscheinlichkeit, Intensität und Dauer solcher Ereignisse deutlich erhöht hat," the World Climate Council writes in its most recent assessments.

In Serbia and Romania, sections of the Danube have also had to be closed to freight traffic in recent weeks. In Prahovo, on the Serbian-Romanian border, the water level dropped to values unusually low for the season. Local media reported exposed wreck parts and old anchor chains suddenly becoming visible.

Ordnance Along the Entire Danube

The Ukrainian ambassador to Budapest meanwhile reminded that ordnance from World War II in Eastern European waters is no rarity. „Die Wehrmacht und andere Streitkräfte haben während des Krieges zahlreiche Minen entlang der Donau versenkt, die nun mit sinkendem Wasserstand auftauchen können," according to a diplomatic statement.

The finds are also significant from an ecological perspective. The additional sunlight on the exposed mudflats alters living conditions for fish and insects. At the same time, new sandbanks are forming along the shores, attracting migratory birds. Researchers at the University of Budapest are documenting the changes using camera drones.

Mammoth Finds in Bulgaria

The Bulgarian paleontologists plan to date the mammoth bones using radiocarbon methods in the coming weeks. Initial comparisons with other finds from the Danube Basin suggest that the animal dates from the late Pleistocene. Should this assumption be confirmed, it would be one of the best-preserved finds from this region in decades.

Riparian states such as the EU and riparian countries such as Austria and Slovakia are currently reviewing whether additional surveys of the riverbed are necessary. The Slovak interior minister announced that the affected site near Virt would be monitored permanently. The recovery of the mine was successfully completed, according to sources in Bratislava.

Journalist Peter Eszterhazy noted in a commentary that the Danube is gaining a new significance as a historical archive. „Jeder freigelegte Knochen und jede geborgene Mine erzählt uns etwas über eine Vergangenheit, die wir längst vergessen glaubten," he wrote.

In the long term, climate researchers expect such low-water events to occur more frequently in Central and Eastern Europe. The current finds along the Danube, according to experts, are therefore unlikely to be an isolated case.
