Causes of the Low Water

According to experts, the causes are an interplay of a long-term precipitation deficit and persistent heat. Both factors lead to less water reaching the river and the level falling continuously over the course of weeks.

The consequences are not limited to shipping. Along the river as well, water levels can have impacts on ecosystems, drinking water supply, and energy generation, which is why authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) is among the institutions that scientifically accompany the hydrological development of the Danube. Researchers there analyze gauge data and draw comparisons to earlier low-water events.

Research and Authorities

The ministry is also involved in monitoring and assessing the situation. It is coordinating with neighboring states along the Danube, as low water is a cross-border matter that affects several countries simultaneously.

Not only Austria but also riparian states are affected by the low water levels. Bulgaria, Croatia, and Romania are among the countries whose sections of the Danube are likewise suffering from the low water. Shipping is also severely restricted in these countries.

Impacts on Riparian States

The situation is also being picked up in domestic political debate. The SPÖ is addressing the impacts on the economy and supply and is calling for measures to cushion the burden on businesses and the population.

Experts emphasize that such low-water events may be part of a larger trend. An increasing frequency of extreme weather conditions, such as longer dry phases in summer, is posing growing challenges for water management.

For the coming weeks, further developments in the water level depend primarily on precipitation in the Danube's catchment areas. If substantial rain fails to materialize, the low water levels are expected to continue.
