The Lower Austrian transport organisation NÖVOG is expanding its bus service to the U-Bahn line U3 during the shutdown of the Vienna main line between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof.
The main line of the Vienna rapid transit (Schnellbahn) is closed between Wien Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof. According to Vanessa Reichenauer, the shutdown also affects commuters from Lower Austria who rely on connections toward the city centre.
To cushion the impact, NÖVOG is increasing its bus service. The additional buses are intended to bring passengers from the Lower Austrian surrounding area to the U3, where they can switch to high-capacity U-Bahn services into the Vienna city centre.
Impact on commuters
The line shutdown between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is one of the central interventions in the Vienna rapid transit network. Without this connection, an important hub for numerous lines is missing, including the S7, which connects Schwechat and Vienna Airport, among others.
