Vienna: Extensive Closures in the Public Transit Network from July – S-Bahn Main Line Interrupted for Over a Year

S-Bahn Main Line: Closure Until Fall 2027

The construction phase kicks off on July 4 with the closure between Floridsdorf and Praterstern, along with several northern connecting lines. During the summer, no service is also planned between Meidling and Hauptbahnhof. In this phase, ÖBB will set up replacement service between Praterstern and Floridsdorf: there will be a bus stopping at all stations as well as a direct connection between the two stations, as stated in the APA report.

S80 and Verbindungsbahn: More Than a Year of Pause

At relatively short notice, ÖBB has also announced the closure of the S80. The background is court approvals that now enable the start of reconstruction work on the so-called Verbindungsbahn between Hütteldorf and Meidling. "Für die dort verkehrende S80 bedeutet das eine vermutlich mehr als einjährige Zwangspause auf diesem Abschnitt", reports APA. "Der Auftakt erfolgt am 4. Juli". For the western section of the S80, a bus will also be in operation, serving all stops.

U3 and U4: Weeks-Long Interruptions in Summer

The subway network is also severely restricted in summer. The U3 will not run between Hütteldorfer Straße and Westbahnhof from July 13 to the end of August, and the U4 will be split from July 3 to the beginning of August, with service between Schwedenplatz and Wien-Mitte suspended. During this time, passengers are advised to use other tram or bus lines; for the U3, a special replacement tram (E3) is available to provide support.

From fall, the city will respond to the inner-city S-Bahn pause with, among other measures, more frequent subway intervals and increased tram capacities. In addition, ÖBB will set up a direct shuttle by bus between Meidling and Längenfeldgasse, taking passengers directly from Meidling station to the U4. "Der Shuttle soll jedoch für eine Entlastung der zu Spitzenzeiten bereits jetzt stark frequentierten U-Bahn-Linie sorgen", according to APA.

CAT and Badner Bahn: Buses Instead of Trains

The City Airport Train (CAT) is also affected: due to the main line closure, customers will be taken to the airport or from there into the city by so-called premium buses instead of trains. The Badner Bahn, meanwhile, will operate only between Baden and the Inzersdorf-Lokalbahn station during the summer holidays; from there to Karlsplatz, there will be no trains during this period.

Donauinselfest: Transportation Plan for the Influx

The closure package poses a particular challenge for the Donauinselfest. The country's largest festival, the Donauinselfest, is usually not affected by summer construction work in the public transit network, because it typically takes place on the weekend before the end of the school year. In 2026, however, it was moved to the first weekend of the holidays (July 3 to 5) to avoid overlapping with the Formula 1 race in Spielberg – right during the opening weeks of the closures.

As the organizers informed APA, a transportation plan has been put together with Wiener Linien and ÖBB. The U6, S45 and tram line 31 will run at more frequent intervals, and the Handelskai stop will be served around the clock over the weekend. In addition, proven measures such as staggered end times at the stages will be used to spread out visitor flows. The extension of line 18 from the third district into Leopoldstadt is also expected to be in operation by then, providing additional capacity.
