In Lower Austria, a new beaver regulation went into review on Friday, intended to end the previous coexistence of different regulations in the federal state and standardize the handling of the protected animal.

The state government is thereby sending a regulatory framework into review that, according to information from the office of FPÖ state councillor Susanne Rosenkranz, is to provide "mehr Rechtssicherheit, klare Zuständigkeiten und raschere Entscheidungen." Uniform guidelines throughout the federal state are to simplify the practice of dealing with beaver damage.

Background: From patchwork to uniform regulation

As Rosenkranz explained on Friday in a press release, the killing of a beaver continues to be permitted only as a last resort. "Die Tötung bleibe jedoch 'Ultima Ratio'", according to Rosenkranz's office upon inquiry. Currently, an expert must be consulted before any intervention; in the future, the procedure is to be designed more leanly.
