The environmental foundation WWF has, in the fourth edition of its Federal State Barometer, evaluated the handling of protected wildlife in Austria and issued a good overall grade to none of the nine federal states.

According to the WWF, the assessment examined the protection and management of five flagship species: beaver, otter, lynx, white-tailed eagle, and wolf. Of 35 individual assessments, 31 fall into the categories "partially implemented" or "deficient." The evaluation was based on six criteria: monitoring, prevention and compensation, management plans, communication, and the implementation of legal requirements. In addition, official data was analyzed and information was gathered from the authorities; eight federal states participated in interviews or questionnaires, with Tyrol alone declining to provide a statement.
