The Lufthansa Group and Air France-KLM have submitted bids for the purchase of the Portuguese state airline TAP, as the Portuguese government confirmed on Tuesday.
The Lufthansa Group and Air France-KLM have submitted bids for the struggling state-owned airline TAP, according to the Portuguese government. Two of the largest European aviation groups are now competing for the airline, which had recently expanded strongly on routes between Europe, Brazil, and Africa. The bidding process is at the center of a politically delicate privatization that Lisbon had pushed forward under the pressure of high sovereign debt and at the urging of international lenders.
According to Portuguese government sources, cited by the news agency Reuters among others, several binding offers have been received. The bids will now be reviewed by a team of advisors before the government decides on the next steps. Neither the Lufthansa Group nor Air France-KLM initially commented publicly on the content or value of their bids.
