Lufthansa Secures Summer Fuel Supply, Promises Refunds for Any Shortage Cancellations

To mitigate any potential disruption from global events, such as a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Vranckx explained that missing fuel deliveries would be compensated by imports from the USA and Africa. He added that European refineries have ramped up their kerosene production to the maximum level.

In a direct message to travelers, Vranckx said customers can book without concern. He detailed a clear customer protection plan should the unexpected occur.

"Sollte es wider Erwarten zu Treibstoffengpässen kommen und deshalb Flüge ausfallen, kann der Kunde wählen: Entweder wird er umgebucht oder er bekommt als Geld-zurück-Garantie den vollen Ticketpreis erstattet," Vranckx stated. This rebooking or full refund guarantee applies to all airlines within the Lufthansa Group.

Airport CEO Echoes Confidence

The sentiment was echoed by Frankfurt Airport's leadership. Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport, the airport's operator, offered a similarly confident outlook.

Schulte told Handelsblatt that passengers should not worry about their bookings regarding kerosene shortages. "Ich würde jedem Fluggast klar sagen: Mach dir über deine Buchung derzeit keine Sorge," he was quoted as saying.

He further stated he sees the fuel supply in Europe as secure for the summer and expects enough kerosene in Europe and Germany in the coming months. "Ich gehe davon aus, dass wir in den nächsten Monaten in Europa und damit auch in Deutschland genügend Kerosin haben. Wenn es gut läuft, auch bis Jahresende," Schulte said.

Passenger Protections

The Lufthansa Group's guarantee is in addition to existing passenger rights. Under applicable law, passengers are already entitled to a refund or alternative transport in the event of flight cancellations, according to the Chamber of Labour.

The coordinated statements from both the airline and its primary hub operator aim to reassure the market and customers ahead of the busy summer travel period.
