Cottbus, 29 June 2026
The Lusatian Lake District between Brandenburg and Saxony was officially opened on Monday, and with around 5,100 hectares of water surface it forms the largest contiguous artificial lake landscape in Europe.
A project with a long history
With the ceremonial opening on 29 June 2026, a generational project comes to an end — one that has transformed the Lusatia region from lignite open-cast mining into a tourism and recreation area. The Lausitzer und Mitteldeutsche Bergbau-Verwaltungsgesellschaft (LMBV) spoke of a "historischen Meilenstein." Where excavators once extracted coal, five interconnected lakes now lie, ready to be explored by boat, by bike, or on foot.
Brandenburg's Minister-President Dietmar Woidke, who by his own account grew up on the edge of the Jänschwalde open-cast mine, personally carried out the opening before departure. "Die Lausitz insgesamt, die sächsische und die brandenburgische Lausitz ist damit noch attraktiver geworden", said Woidke. He also emphasized: "Es sind Arbeitsplätze entstanden, der Tourismus ist vorangekommen." For him it was "für mich persönlich ist es ´was ganz Besonderes" gewesen.
