French President Emmanuel Macron has enacted a controversial law on assisted dying for seriously ill adults, placing France among a group of European countries that allow assisted suicide under specific conditions.
The law came into force following its publication in the official gazette. According to the accompanying report, it provides that seriously ill adults may gain access to assisted suicide under strict conditions. Medical teams are to prepare and accompany the procedure, but suicide carried out by the patient themselves is excluded. Implementation remains tied to a multi-stage review process involving, among others, physicians, a second medical opinion, and a procedure before a panel.
