Geosphere Austria pointed out that earthquakes of this strength are rare in Tyrol but not unusual. In the Alps, tectonic stresses repeatedly occur that can be released in the form of quakes. A magnitude of 3.5 is classified as a light earthquake, which typically rarely causes damage to buildings.

The authorities said they were in contact with the emergency services in the region. The Tyrol State Warning Center was monitoring the situation, and a major operation was not initially triggered. Police and the Tyrol rescue control center were also on heightened alert.

Such reports help the earthquake service to more accurately record the effects of a quake.

During the night before Saturday and in the hours after the quake, there were no notable aftershocks, according to Geosphere Austria. Should seismic activity change, the service would publish updated information, it said from Vienna.

In neighboring Bavaria, the quake was also weakly felt or not at all, according to data from the earthquake services. The reach of a magnitude 3.5 quake typically remains limited to the immediate vicinity of the epicenter.

Based on initial analyses, the tremor was the most clearly perceptible quake in the Hall in Tirol region in several years. Geosphere Austria noted that the data would be refined in the coming hours; in particular, the exact depth of the quake and the precise localization could still change slightly after evaluation of additional measuring stations.

For the public, the earthquake service issued the usual safety advice: in the event of further perceptible tremors, one should stay away from windows, shelves, and exterior walls and seek shelter outdoors or under sturdy furniture.
