A review study led by cardiologist Thomas Münzel of the University of Mainz concludes that nicotine damages the cardiovascular system regardless of the form in which it is consumed.
The team evaluated molecular biology investigations and clinical studies on the effects of nicotine on the cardiovascular system. The central question was whether alternative products such as e-cigarettes, heat-not-burn tobacco products, or oral nicotine pouches are less dangerous than classic cigarettes. The analysis reaches a clear conclusion: no nicotine-containing product is risk-free.
First author Thomas Münzel of the Institute of Cardiology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz said of the main findings: "Das Ergebnis ist eindeutig: Verbrennung (von nikotinhaltigen Produkten; Anm.) verursacht die stärkste Toxizität, doch kein nikotinhaltiges Produkt - ob geraucht, erhitzt, verdampft oder oral aufgenommen - ist für das Herz-Kreislauf-System risikofrei." While toxicity is highest when burning tobacco, nicotine itself still attacks the blood vessels.
