Cologne, 26 May 2026

According to a representative study released on 26 May 2026, the share of 12- to 17-year-olds in Germany who smoke has risen from 6.1 percent in 2021 to 9.6 percent in 2025, while vaping also surged.

The 2025 Drug Affinity Study, conducted by the Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG), surveyed 7,001 people aged 12 to 25 between April and June 2025. It reveals that almost one in ten adolescents now smokes conventional cigarettes, a sharp increase from the 6.1 percent recorded in 2021.

E-cigarette and vape use among the same age group has also grown dramatically. Five years ago, only 2.9 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds reported regular vaping; in 2025, that figure reached 6.7 percent.

Rise of E-Cigarettes and Vapes

Federal Drug Commissioner Hendrik Streeck expressed alarm at the trend. “Vape” leitet sich vom englischen Wort Vaporizer, also Verdampfer ab, he explained, but warned that many products contain dangerous substances. “Zum Teil seien diese Zusatzstoffe ‘gesundheitsschädlich oder krebserregend und gehören nicht in die Lungen’,” Streeck said.
