Two severe earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening (local time); according to initial findings, at least 32 people were killed and around 700 others were injured.

State of Emergency and Initial Death Toll

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency in an address. She spoke of an "incident with serious consequences." Rodríguez announced that she would ask multilateral organizations for financial assistance for reconstruction.

The epicenter of the first quake on Wednesday at 6:04 p.m. (local time) was located, according to reports, 24 kilometers east of San Felipe in the northwest of the South American country at a depth of 21.9 kilometers. The second quake occurred at a depth of only 10 kilometers. Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela within one minute.
