Caracas, 25 June 2026
Two major earthquakes struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday, the largest measuring 7.5 in magnitude, collapsing buildings in Caracas and prompting acting President Delcy Rodríguez to declare a state of emergency.
Twin tremors near the Caribbean coast
The first tremor, a 7.2-magnitude foreshock, struck at about 6 p.m. Eastern time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and was followed less than a minute later by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake in the same area. USGS described the twin events as a "doublet," with epicenters estimated to be about three miles apart near the town of Morón on Venezuela's Caribbean coast, approximately 100 miles west of Caracas. The shaking had a depth of roughly 13 kilometers and was felt in neighboring Colombia.
