More than 400 cats have been freed from suspected animal thieves during a raid in Ho Chi Minh City, while Vietnam's trade in dog and cat meat continues to flourish despite growing social criticism.
The Raid and Its Aftermath
In mid-June, investigators raided locations in the former Saigon metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City and discovered more than 400 frightened, starved, and tightly packed cats in cages. According to police, it was one of the largest raids against the illegal animal trade in Vietnam. Just a few days after the discovery, more than 40 of the furry animals were able to return to their owners, the animal welfare organization Humane World for Animals (HWA) reported.
