Approval of EU membership among the Austrian population has risen slightly, while a majority of respondents reject any enlargement of the Union over the next five years, according to a poll released on Saturday.

The Austrian Society for European Politics (ÖGfE) and the market Institute have presented new data on the attitudes of Austrians toward the European Union. According to the findings, basic support for EU membership is growing, while skepticism toward a rapid enlargement of the community of states persists. The results thus paint a nuanced picture of the mood on European policy in the country.

The Secretary General of the ÖGfE, Paul Schmidt, interpreted the poll as confirmation that the EU has gained in attractiveness for many people in Austria. At the same time, he pointed to Canada's and the United Kingdom's rapprochement with the EU as well as to intensified trade partnerships. Canada's and the United Kingdom's rapprochement with the EU, as well as intensified trade partnerships, also make clear that the Union acts as a dependable partner globally and is gaining in importance," the analysis reads.
