Kuala Lumpur, June 01, 2026

Malaysia has enacted a ban on social media use by individuals under the age of 16, effective June 1, 2026, based on the Online Safety Act 2025.

The new regulations are being implemented by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and apply to platforms with at least eight million users in the country. These include, but are not limited to, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

The regulation is based on two complementary frameworks: the Child Protection Code and the Risk Mitigation Code. The Child Protection Code mandates a safety-by-design approach for service providers, integrating safety from the initial stages of development.
