Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wants the social media ban for under-16s in effect since December 2025 to be reviewed and simultaneously equip the internet regulator with expanded powers.
Initial situation: Ban since December
Since December, platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok have been legally required in Australia to block users under 16 or prevent their registration. The law is one of the first of its kind worldwide and has attracted international attention. The Australian government hoped this would better protect children and young people from the risks of social networks.
According to a recently published study, however, three months after the ban came into force, 85 percent of Australians aged twelve to 15 were still using social media. The central objective of the regulation has thus so far been clearly missed. Experts see this as a clear signal that pure access restrictions alone are not sufficient.
