Hull River Heads, Queensland, 24 May 2026

A 39-year-old man died after a shark attack at the Kennedy Shoal coral reef off Queensland’s north-east coast on Sunday, police said.

Queensland Police confirmed the man was brought to shore at the Hull River Heads boat ramp, about 160 kilometres south of the tourism hub Cairns, but died from his injuries before he could receive advanced medical care.

"Der Mann wurde aus dem Wasser geborgen und erlag seinen Verletzungen," police said in a statement, which translates as "The man was retrieved from the water and succumbed to his injuries." Authorities have not released his identity, pending notification of next of kin.

Kennedy Shoal lies within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and is reachable mainly by private boat from coastal towns such as Cardwell. The remote boat ramp where the victim was brought ashore is surrounded by mangroves and serves local fishers and recreational boaters.
