Shark Safety in Queensland Waters

State shark control programs use nets and drumlines to protect popular swimming beaches, but these do not extend to remote offshore reefs like Kennedy Shoal, leaving boaters and divers to rely on their own vigilance.

The Queensland Police Service stated that a report would be prepared for the coroner, standard procedure for any unexpected death. Investigators have not called for any hunt for the animal, consistent with conservation-focused shark management policies.

In the wake of the tragedy, police reiterated general marine safety advice: avoid bleeding fish in the water, do not swim at dusk or dawn, and stay close to a boat when diving or snorkelling in unpatrolled waters.

Investigation and Response

Fatal shark attacks remain extremely rare. According to the Australian Shark Incident Database, the country sees an average of one to two unprovoked fatalities a year, despite millions of ocean user-days.

Tourism representatives in north Queensland expressed condolences but emphasised that the reef remains a safe experience for visitors who follow marine guidelines. "Our thoughts are with the man's family," a local boating association spokesperson said.
