A 60-year-old man in Pöllau, in the Styrian district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld, set his wooden garden shed and roughly 150 square metres of meadow and undergrowth on fire on Saturday afternoon while attempting to smoke out a ground wasp nest.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Pöllau, a municipality in the eastern Styrian district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld. According to the verified account, the 60-year-old attempted to drive out a colony of ground wasps that had settled on his property, using smoke as a deterrent. The method instead produced an uncontrolled fire that quickly spread to a nearby wooden garden hut and the surrounding vegetation.
The flames consumed the garden shed and scorched approximately 150 square metres of grassland and scrub. The extent of the damage was described as considerable, though the verified facts do not specify a monetary figure. No injuries to people were reported in connection with the blaze.
