Pöllau, July 12, 2026
A 60-year-old from the district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld set his wooden garden shed as well as approximately 150 square meters of meadow and brush on fire on Saturday afternoon while attempting to smoke out a ground wasp nest in Pöllau, Styria.
According to APA, the man had tried to smoke out a ground wasp nest using gasoline at around 4:50 p.m. In the process, the immediate vicinity of the nest initially caught fire, as the Pöllau fire department reported.
The fire then spread rapidly, engulfing a wooden garden shed as well as approximately 150 square meters of meadow and brush. The flames thus spread to a significantly larger area than the 60-year-old had apparently intended.
