Marc Marquez wins Hungarian Sprint, ties record

Qualifying and Race Progression

In qualifying, Marquez set the benchmark with a lap time of 1:36.785 minutes. Pedro Acosta, Marquez's Spanish compatriot, qualified for the front row with a deficit of just 0.053 seconds, followed by Fermin Aldeguer in third place, 0.340 seconds behind. The close qualifying duel between Marquez and Acosta already hinted at a tight Sprint.

In the race itself, however, Acosta could not keep up with the Ducati rider. The KTM rider defended his second place against Marco Bezzecchi, who finished third, 2.722 seconds behind the winner. Bezzecchi is riding for Aprilia this season and travels to Hungary as the World Championship leader.

Behind the top three, Raul Fernandez finished fourth (3.973 seconds behind) and Fermin Aldeguer fifth (4.366 seconds) to complete the chasing group. Jorge Martin, also starting for Aprilia, finished sixth, 5.708 seconds behind. The remaining positions in the Sprint were taken by Diego Moreira (Honda, 6.285 seconds behind) in seventh, Enea Bastianini (KTM) in eighth, Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) in ninth, and Fabio di Giannantonio (Ducati) in tenth.

Comeback After Injury

Marquez's performance was particularly noteworthy considering his physical condition. The Spaniard had suffered a crash in Jerez at the end of April, sustaining shoulder and foot injuries, and subsequently underwent two operations. Despite these medical interventions, he returned in time for the event in Hungary and showed strong form in both qualifying and the Sprint. However, Marquez has not yet won a Grand Prix main race in the current 2026 season.

Marquez had entered the event as the reigning world champion and last year's winner in Hungary. His Sprint victory at the Balaton Park Circuit, which was only recently added to the MotoGP calendar, underscores his continued class even in the shortened race distance. With his historic 18th Sprint success, he has definitively secured a place in the MotoGP record books.

Outlook for the Main Race

The actual main race over 27 laps is scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 PM (local time). Marquez will once again start from pole position, Acosta will start from second place, and Aldeguer from third. In addition to the MotoGP class, races in the Moto2 and Moto3 categories will also be held on Sunday.

The starting situation for the overall standings remains exciting after the Sprint. While Bezzecchi, as the World Championship leader, is still waiting for a Sprint or race win, Marquez is further extending his position in the standings with his points from the Sprint victory. Acosta, with his second place, shows that he has also arrived in the leading group of the field and can regularly compete for podium places this season.

The Hungarian Grand Prix at the Balaton Park Circuit marks one of the newest venues on the MotoGP calendar. The track on the western shore of Lake Balaton has proven to be a fast and technically demanding circuit since its inclusion, with its layout already causing several surprises.
