Marco Schwarz crashes in Sölden after just a few metres

Analysis of the crash shows what was supposedly an unproblematic section. The line was set relatively straight in the upper area, which is why Marco Schwarz apparently wanted to choose the fastest and most direct route possible.

When attempting to take the prescribed line even more tightly, the ÖSV star moved too far to the inside. The result was a crash in which he slid across his ski boot. His deviation from the line also tore a gate out of the course.

For Marco Schwarz, this injury means that he was unable to complete the course in Sölden with the intensity he had hoped for. The circumstances of the race meant that the first metres of his run marked the end of his schedule.

ÖSV athletes at the start

Julia Scheib, Hans Knauß, Marco Odermatt and frech were also competing in this race. Marco Schwarz's injury was therefore part of an ÖSV team featuring several athletes.

The reporting on the incident particularly emphasises the short period between the start and the crash. Just a few moments after setting off and the first turns were enough to abruptly end an undertaking planned for the race.

Marco Schwarz is described in the reports as the Carinthian and as an ÖSV star. He had risked an especially direct run on the relatively straight course layout in the upper section, which did not go as intended.

Direct attempt with consequences

How the World Cup bronze medallist, as Marco Schwarz can be counted, is dealing with the injury, and whether there are any consequences, could not be determined from the available report. The only thing that can be confirmed with certainty is the crash in Sölden and the gate removal it caused.

The incident also shows how quickly an apparently brief opportunity for a direct attempt can end in ski racing. In any case, Marco Schwarz's run in Sölden was over within the first metres after the start.
