Saarbrücken, 13 June 2026

In Germany, fruit spread may once again bear the word "Marmelade" on the jar from this Friday, while honey will in future have to list all countries of origin with their respective weight shares on the label.

The new rules take effect on 13 June 2026 and are the result of an ordinance from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, which transposes into national law an EU directive – the so-called Breakfast Directive – that was already amended two years ago. Until now, EU law prescribed that only products made from citrus fruits could be called "Marmelade"; everything else had to be labeled "Konfitüre." That restriction now falls away.
