WASHINGTON, 13 July 2026

Sen. Mitch McConnell said Sunday that a fall on June 14 led to his hospitalization, his first public explanation for a stay that lasted weeks and that has kept the Kentucky Republican, 84, out of the Senate.

In a written statement released after weeks of mounting public speculation, McConnell said doctors have confirmed that he did not break any bones or suffer a concussion at the time of the fall's most acute effects, and that further tests ruled out a heart attack, stroke, tumors, and hemorrhages. "My doctors have confirmed that I didn't break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn't have a heart attack or a stroke. I don't have any tumors or hemorrhages," McConnell said. The statement was accompanied by a smiling photo of McConnell with his wife, Elaine Chao.
