Vienna, 08 August 2026

Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger will meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Tuesday to discuss bilateral relations and international issues.

Broader diplomatic initiative

The meeting is part of a broader diplomatic initiative by Vienna. Immediately after the election in Austria, Meinl-Reisinger had announced that she would seek contact with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the USA, Russia, China, Great Britain, and France. The talks with Rubio mark the start of this series.

For Rubio, this is his first trip to Vienna since taking office in January 2025. This gives the meeting special significance from Austria's perspective, as there has been no direct personal exchange at foreign minister level between Vienna and Washington for more than a year.
