Meinl-Reisinger speaks with Iran's Foreign Minister about blockade and nuclear conflict

At the center of the call was the concern that a sustained blockade could severely burden the global economy. Meinl-Reisinger warned that such a development would hit the Global South particularly hard and threatened to trigger a famine crisis there. The Foreign Minister also made clear that Austria is committed to a diplomatic path in the nuclear conflict. She insisted on a new agreement that fully involves the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA. From Vienna's perspective, such involvement is indispensable to maintaining nuclear security and the credibility of non-proliferation.

Diplomacy instead of confrontation

The call is part of a series of international contacts through which Vienna seeks to maintain the dialogue with Tehran. Austria thereby acts as a mediator seeking to build bridges between the parties to the conflict – in particular between Iran and the United States under Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The goal is to prevent an escalation and to keep the channels of communication open.

The Foreign Ministry in Vienna said that it takes Iranian interests seriously but also expects signals of willingness to cooperate. The message is that de-escalation is in the mutual interest. Only through negotiations, not confrontation, can the open questions be resolved – this is the line of Austrian diplomacy.

Vienna's mediating role

Observers interpret the direct line to Tehran as a sign that Vienna is sticking to its mediating role even in difficult phases. The talks with the United States in Washington are to be seen as complementary: while the major strategic lines are negotiated there, in Vienna the focus is on concrete steps toward de-escalation and on humanitarian aspects.

According to the Foreign Ministry, regional stability in the Near and Middle East was also a topic. From Austria's perspective, a resolution of the nuclear dispute would reduce tensions in the region and pave the way for economic recovery. The Global South in particular, which suffers from the consequences of sanctions and trade barriers, could benefit from this.

In conclusion, Meinl-Reisinger emphasized that Austria would continue its efforts to bring all sides involved to the table.
