Meinl-Reisinger also used the talks to point to Austria's recent achievements at the United Nations. In a statement from the ministry, it said the minister had informed Rubio about the significance of the recently won seat on the UN Security Council. Austria had prevailed clearly over Germany in a secret ballot with 131 votes, while Germany could only count 104 countries behind it.

According to participants, one focus of the exchange was on Ukraine. Rubio reportedly informed about the state of US diplomatic efforts, while Meinl-Reisinger outlined Austria's humanitarian contributions. The situation in the Middle East, particularly in relations with Iran, was also addressed.

Ukraine and Iran in Focus

No concrete results or agreements were initially made public. Both ministries pointed to ongoing coordination in the respective capitals. A joint statement was scheduled for late afternoon.

The meeting was accompanied by a small delegation on both sides. According to the Foreign Ministry, the US side was accompanied by senior staff, including political advisors and desk officers for Europe and the Middle East. The Austrian side was accompanied, among others, by Secretary-General Christian Schmidt.

Vienna as a Bridge Between the EU and the US

In Vienna's diplomatic circles, the meeting was seen as a sign of Austria's growing importance as an intermediary between the EU and the US. Vienna has served as a bridge between Washington and European capitals on several occasions in recent years. Rubio had already visited several European capitals in recent weeks, including Berlin and Paris.

Observers pointed out that the encounter comes at a time when transatlantic relations are under pressure. Meinl-Reisinger had repeatedly stressed that Austria, as a neutral state, could contribute to de-escalation. According to participants, Rubio explicitly welcomed this approach.

Further Appointments in Preparation

A joint working lunch was planned to conclude the meeting. Further bilateral appointments between Vienna and Washington were being prepared for the coming months, according to the Foreign Ministry.

A background briefing at the Foreign Ministry was scheduled for the evening to provide an update on the ongoing negotiations. A reception at the City of Vienna's guesthouse for the US delegation was also planned.

Rubio's trip to Vienna was explicitly not in his capacity as a former senior politician, but as the sitting Secretary of State of the United States. Both ministries announced that further details on joint projects would be released in the coming weeks.
