Several members of the European Parliament have called on football associations in the EU states, in a letter, to push for an investigation against FIFA President Gianni Infantino after US President Trump phoned FIFA on the matter of the World Cup.

Background: Call from Washington

The letter is addressed to the national football associations of the EU member states and was initiated, among others, by Danish Social Democrat Niels Fuglsang. Sources in Parliament said just a few hours before the signing deadline on Wednesday evening that there were more than 55 signatures from MEPs.

The background is a phone call between Trump and the FIFA leadership, in which the US President said he had asked for a review of the match ban on Folarin Balogun. Balogun had been suspended for the round of 16 match against Belgium after being sent off with a yellow-red card in the round of 32 against Bosnia-Herzegovina. The USA had lost the match against Belgium 1-4 despite the player's absence.
