The British newspaper "The Times" reports that the decision to suspend the ban on professional footballer Folarin Balogun following a red card was made unilaterally by the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Mohammad al-Kamali from the United Arab Emirates.

The incident raises questions about how the panel operates. According to the report, the other 18 members of the Disciplinary Committee were not consulted. It is customary at FIFA for disciplinary decisions to be prepared and backed by a multi-member panel.

According to the report, Al-Kamali was elected together with the rest of the Disciplinary Committee at the 2025 FIFA Congress in Paraguay. He is said to receive around US$160,000 annually from FIFA. His deputy and predecessor, Jorge Palacio of Colombia, by contrast, receives US$26,000 per year — a significant disparity that underscores the chairman's special position.
