Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev agreed on Tuesday in Berlin on closer cooperation in the energy sector, which provides for significantly higher gas deliveries from Azerbaijan to Germany.
So far, an annual delivery of 1.5 billion cubic meters has been agreed upon. Since the beginning of the year, Azerbaijani gas has been flowing to Germany. At the meeting in the Federal Chancellery, the focus was on noticeably increasing this volume. Azerbaijan is one of the few countries in the region with an energy surplus, Merz said.
The Chancellor underscored the strategic significance of the cooperation. He said Azerbaijan was therefore an "interesting partner country" for securing Germany's energy supply. "Ever since we stopped gas deliveries from Russia four and a half years ago, we have of course been looking for new sources of supply – and Azerbaijan plays an important role here," Merz said in Berlin. Federal Chancellor Merz said in Berlin that he had discussed the possibilities with President Aliyev.
