Friedrich Merz (CDU) confirmed on Thursday in a government statement in the Bundestag that Germany will acquire US Tomahawk cruise missiles and station them on its own territory.
The agreement was reached on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara with the American government, Merz said. He also pointed out that the negotiations had not yet been concluded on Wednesday. With the acquisition, Germany is closing an important strategic gap in its defense, Merz explained. The deployment will take place in coordination with NATO alliance partners.
The BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missile was commissioned in the United States in 1983 and was first used in combat during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq in 1991. According to the Ministry of Defense, the missiles, which are around six meters long and weigh up to 1.5 tons, can carry warheads weighing 450 kilograms. They are capable of attacking heavily fortified targets such as air defense systems, command centers, and military airfields at a distance of up to 2,500 kilometers.
