German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius demanded a clear sign of unity at the NATO summit in Ankara while at the same time describing talks on intermediate-range weapons as movement, but not yet a result.

On the morning of the second day of the summit, the SPD politician told Deutschlandfunk that he hoped for a strong signal of unity. This unity is needed to close the strategic gap in intermediate-range weapons that has arisen from the announced withdrawal of American capabilities from NATO planning. The meeting in Turkey thus stood directly under the sign of dealing with the changed role of the USA within the alliance.

With regard to intermediate-range weapons, Pistorius stressed that there is movement, but no results yet. "Wir sind sehr viel weiter," he said with a view to new arms cooperation, drones, space capabilities, and the European project for precision-guided long-range weapons. He considers an agreement with the USA on the purchase of such weapons possible. The purchase of Tomahawk cruise missiles is at the same time being presented as an alternative to their stationing in Germany. When exactly Germany will take on which additional military tasks "in den nächsten Monaten und wahrscheinlich erst in den nächsten Jahren wirklich endgültig herausstellen" will become clear, he said.
