Chancellor Friedrich Merz received the new Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar in Berlin during his inaugural visit and assured him of full support in leading Hungary "back to the center of Europe."

Merz sees Magyar's election as a signal for Europe

At the meeting in the Chancellery, Merz described the election victory of the 45-year-old Magyar over the right-wing populist Viktor Orban as an "inspiration for all of Europe." He wants to help "ensure that this new beginning in Hungary is a success," the Chancellor said, according to a statement from the Federal Government. With his visit to Berlin, Magyar continued his inaugural tour, which had previously taken him to Poland, Austria, and the EU capital Brussels.
