Brussels, 29 May 2026
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar is set to meet EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels today to discuss the release of more than 10 billion euros in EU funds frozen over rule-of-law violations under his predecessor Viktor Orbán.
The blocked funds include 10.4 billion euros from a COVID-19 recovery fund and 7.6 billion euros from other EU funding programs. Additional pots, such as a defense fund, could also be considered for Hungary.
The Frozen Billions
The EU Commission expects Budapest to implement numerous measures referred to as 'Super-Meilensteine' — super milestones — for the release of the money. The core conditions center on strengthening the rule of law and fighting corruption.
