After the German national football team's elimination in a penalty shootout against Paraguay, Chancellor Friedrich Merz triggered outrage and mockery with a tweet worded in an inappropriately positive tone.

The German team was knocked out of the World Cup by outsider Paraguay. The match ended in a penalty shootout, and shortly afterward the official Chancellor's account published a post that barely addressed the elimination and instead largely dispensed praise.

The tweet and its impact

It read: "Auch wenn das Ausscheiden schmerzt: Was für ein Spiel". In a further post the Chancellor's Office added: "Mit eurem Einsatz und Teamgeist bei dieser WM habt ihr unser Land begeistert. Wir sind stolz auf euch." Many users felt the tone was inappropriate, given that the German team had lost clearly.
