Metal spheres on Australian beach identified as harmless pressure vessels from space

After the find, authorities launched a major operation north of the city of Townsville. Under police guard, people in protective suits transported the finds into hazardous-material containers. The Queensland fire department set up a 50-meter safety perimeter, according to a post on Facebook, and barred onlookers from access.

Initially, following a BBC report, there had been speculation that the containers could be filled with highly flammable or reactive substances. Space expert Alice Gorman of Flinders University told the "Guardian" that the spheres could contain residues of hydrazine, a highly toxic and highly flammable rocket propellant. Authorities have not officially confirmed this possibility so far.

Danger in orbit and on Earth

It is now clear that the objects are not dangerous, the ASA said via Facebook. The space agency has already determined the likely origin of the spheres but provided no further details. The exact identification is being worked on with international organizations, it added.

It has yet to be officially confirmed which rocket the spheres came from and from which country it was launched. Only then can it be determined who is responsible for the objects. The ASA now classifies the finds as space debris.

Pressure vessels like these pose a danger mainly in low Earth orbit, namely to other satellites. Since the beginning of 2024 alone, 26 rocket stages have been added to the space debris in this orbit, where they will remain for around 25 years. If pieces nevertheless crash down, they usually land in an ocean or in an uninhabited area such as Australia.

Space debris that has survived the plunge through the atmosphere is repeatedly found in Australia. A recently published analysis listed the 50 most dangerous objects in space; it documented the increasing pressure on near-Earth orbit.

Authorities' recommendation

The Queensland Fire Department appealed via Facebook to walkers not to touch any spheres they find. The ASA also stated that it had recovered the objects and classified them as harmless.

A total of six metallic spheres washed up on Forrest Beach. Investigations into the final attribution are ongoing; according to authorities, there is no indication of an acute danger to the public.

The ASA stresses that the incidents draw attention to a growing problem: the number of derelict rocket parts in orbit is rising, and the likelihood that fragments will reach Earth's surface increases with growing traffic in space.
