Metallica delivered a career-spanning set to approximately 50,000 fans at Stadion Letzigrund in Zurich on Wednesday evening, marking the band’s return to the city where they played their first European concert in 1984.
A Stage in the Round
The concert opened with ‘Creeping Death’ and ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’ from the 1984 album ‘Ride The Lightning’, immediately igniting the crowd. Frontman James Hetfield later addressed the audience, declaring the show far better than their last Swiss appearance in 2009 and welcoming everyone into the “Metallica family of Switzerland,” a bond he said could never be broken.
The M72 World Tour’s signature 360-degree stage was positioned in the middle of the stadium, with approximately 1,500 fans standing inside the donut-shaped structure in the exclusive Snakepit area. During the performance, Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo circled this inner section, while Lars Ulrich’s drum kit moved across the stage.
