Armin Papperger has warned of a possible failure of the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) tank project and raised the prospect of an impending French withdrawal.
In an interview with "Welt am Sonntag," Papperger said a danger to the joint venture was "immer da", but that "noch nichts entschieden". At the same time, he acknowledged that he could not say today whether the MGCS project would even exist: "Das ist eine Wahnsinnszeit. Ich kann heute nicht sagen, ob es überhaupt ein MGCS geben wird."
According to the newspaper, the concern stems from France wanting to drastically cut funding for the MGCS project. Papperger said on the matter: "Wir haben null Entscheidungen über das finale Budget." If less money were available, things would not move faster, "und wir sind jetzt schon sehr langsam", he added.
