Microsoft and Mistral Deepen AI Alliance with Multi-Billion-Dollar Deal

Mistral's new model Medium 3.5 for cost-efficient enterprise applications as well as OCR 4 for automated document processing are now available on Microsoft's development platform. The language model "Mistral Medium 3.5" will also be integrated into Microsoft's automation platform Copilot Studio. The partners also intend to more deeply integrate Mistral's AI models into Microsoft's platforms, including Microsoft Foundry, Copilot Studio, and Azure.

Through the integration of Mistral's European AI models into Microsoft's product portfolio, customers are to receive flexible deployment options. According to the plans, applications can be operated either in the public cloud, in locally connected infrastructures, or entirely autonomously in physically isolated systems ("fully disconnected"). In the future, companies should be able to run applications either in the public cloud, on their own systems, or completely separated from external networks.

Flexible Deployment Options for Regulated Industries

This is aimed in particular at industries with high requirements for data protection and IT security, such as banks, hospitals, industrial companies, or operators of critical infrastructure. Public authorities are also part of the target group. Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, told Reuters that the agreement does not include a new equity stake in the start-up.

Mistral plans to expand its European AI infrastructure with thousands of next-generation Nvidia GPUs from the Vera Rubin line, which are to be used for training, inference, and the large-scale deployment of AI models. Mistral has gained Microsoft as a reliable bulk buyer for part of the newly created GPU capacity, which Microsoft will use for its cloud and AI services.

The agreement underscores Microsoft's strategy of not relying solely on its US partner OpenAI in the area of generative AI, but of bringing other key players in the global ecosystem on board early on. Although the company continues to work closely with OpenAI, it is increasingly investing in other providers as well and integrating their models into its products.

Background: Previous Collaboration Since 2024

Microsoft and Mistral have already been working together since 2024. At the time, Microsoft brought Mistral's models into its Azure cloud and, as part of the partnership, took a stake of 15 million euros in the French company. The company, founded in 2023, is considered one of the most important European AI start-ups and is frequently viewed as a European counterweight to major US providers.

Brad Smith formulated the strategic direction with a view to Europe as follows: "Europe should have access to the most powerful AI solutions in the world without compromising control over its data, operations, or its digital future." The background is that both European companies and public institutions often face legal and regulatory hurdles when deploying US AI solutions.

Strategic Context: OpenAI and the Geopolitical Situation

In the previous month, access to two advanced Anthropic models outside the US had been temporarily restricted at the direction of the US government – a circumstance that had further reinforced the concerns of European customers regarding dependence on US providers. The solutions will be jointly marketed by Mistral and Microsoft, who are pursuing a joint go-to-market strategy for this purpose.

According to the companies, the agreement rests on three pillars: infrastructure capacity, model integration, and deployment options.
