French AI Giant Mistral Acquires Austrian Startup Emmi in €500 Million Deal

Brandstetter, who will become Mistral’s Vice President of AI for Science, emphasized the deal’s significance for European tech sovereignty. Emmi AI raised €15 million in 2025, one of Austria’s largest startup funding rounds, with backing from Vienna-based venture firms 3VC and SpeedInvest (each holding 11% stakes). Founders Brandstetter and Dennis Just retain roughly 21.7% ownership each, while NXAI, founded by AI pioneer Sepp Hochreiter, holds over 16%.

The purchase price remains officially undisclosed, but insider reports estimate a mid-three-figure million sum. The deal underscores Europe’s growing ambition to compete in AI-driven industrial innovation.
